Shamsi Air Base in control of Pakistan Army

Pakistani security forces on Sunday took control of a Shamsi airbase in Washak district of Balochistan province after US military personnel vacated the facility in line with a demand from the government of Pakistan.
Pakistani Civil Aviation, Minisatry of Defence and Interior Ministry officials have also arrived at the airbase to take its full control.

The US had already shifted five drone aircraft from Shamsi airbase to Afghanistan. US personnel dismantled residential barracks which had been set up for the military personnel.

Earlier, Pakistan had asked the U.S. to vacate Shamsi airbase in Balochistan province following NATO fighter jets and helicopters bombed two border posts on November 26 and killed 24 soldiers.

After the 9/11 incident the former president Pervez Musharraf government had allowed the United Stares to use two airbases in the province — Dalbandin and Shamsi.

The Shamsi airbase was built in 1992 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the then ruler of the United Arab Emirates. The US had been using the airbase since late 2001 for military operations in Afghanistan and drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal belt.
